A strong season, with tighter rules

India's spice and herb exports continue to grow on the back of steady demand from the Gulf, Europe, North America and Southeast Asia. Turmeric, chilli, cumin, coriander and moringa lead the volume, while value-added powders and blends are the fastest growing segment. For importers, two forces matter most this season: tighter residue limits in destination markets and more predictable freight.

European buyers in particular are moving from spot checks to routine testing of pesticide residues and heavy metals. Consignments that clear a pre-shipment lab test rarely fail at destination, so buyers who insist on testing before loading are the ones avoiding costly rejections.

What changed for buyers

  • EU and UK: continued scrutiny on ethylene oxide, chlorate and multi-residue screens.
  • Gulf markets: stronger demand for packaged retail formats and Arabic labelling.
  • North America: growing interest in organic and fair-trade documentation.
  • Freight: rates stabilised compared with the volatility of recent years, with better schedule reliability.

How to plan your purchases

Book your volume against an approved sample rather than against a description. Freeze the specification in writing โ€” curcumin percentage, mesh size, moisture, volatile oil, microbial limits โ€” and require a pre-shipment lab report against those numbers. Where your market demands it, add third-party inspection.

A buyer who approves a sample and a test protocol before production almost never has a quality dispute at discharge. That is the single most effective risk control in spice trading.
